While the exact questions you should ask depends on what you are trying to accomplish (i.e., are you trying to get a sense of whether or not employees are satisfied, how engaged they are, if they’re pleased with the company’s benefits package, etc.), it can definitely be helpful to review a list of questions commonly asked on employee surveys before you get started.

25 Questions Often Included on Employee Surveys

Please note that this list is not intended to be a stand-alone employee survey. The questionnaire that you use should reflect the unique nature of your workplace and your company’s strategies and goals. This list is intended simply to be a starting point to help you begin brainstorming the questions that you really need to ask.

Frequently-asked employee survey questions include:

  1. Do you feel that your efforts are appreciated?
  2. Do you feel that you know what is expected of you?
  3. Does your supervisor provide you with constructive performance feedback?
  4. Is your manager available to you?
  5. Do you view the overall communication clime in the company to be open?
  6. Do you feel that your supervisor is forthcoming with information that you need to know in order to perform your job?
  7. Do you feel that the company’s policies are followed consistently?
  8. Does the performance evaluation process reflect what it takes to be successful in your job?
  9. Do you feel that teamwork is encouraged within the company?
  10. Are your supervisor’s expectations reasonable?
  11. Do you find your work to be challenging?
  12. Do you feel a pride in the work that you do?
  13. Do you get a sense of satisfaction from your job?
  14. Do you understand how your job relates to other positions within the company?
  15. Have you been properly trained to perform your job effectively?
  16. Do you have sufficient resources and tools to perform your job effectively?
  17. Do you feel that the company provides support for you to grow and develop in your profession?

  23. Do you feel a sense of pride when responding to questions about where you work?

  25. Are you actively looking for a different job?

These are just a few examples of the many questions that can be included in an employee survey.

Response Structure Matters

Note that employee surveys typically do not pose questions in a “yes or no” format. Response options typically include multiple options like ‘always, most of the time, sometimes, rarely, never’ or ask employees to rank their responses on a scale of 1 to 5.
